DIY Personalized Arabesque Tile Ornament

Did you know you can make ornaments using tiles from the hardware store? These arabesque or lantern tiles can be personalized with your Cricut to make beautiful gifts for friends and family.

I love making personalized gifts. If you do too and you’re looking for other great personalized Christmas gifts, check out the Spotify glass tutorial.

This arabesque tile ornament is so easy to make and can be easily customized with your own photo and words. Grab the free template from the resource library to get started!

HOW TO MAKE ARABESQUE TILE ORNAMENTS

If you’d rather watch a video on how to make it step by step, take a look at this video here (highly recommended!):

STEP 1: UPLOAD FILES

Upload the file into Cricut Design Space.

Upload the image you’d like to use as well. (Save this as a Print then Cut when prompted.)

STEP 2: DESIGN

Drag the tile layer above your photo. (Layers panel)

Change the tile layer from “cut” to “draw”.

This creates an outline for us to center and size our image and preview what it will look like on the tile.

Once you are happy with the size and placement, select both layers and click on SLICE.

You should now have a few layers. Delete all the layers we don’t want (the excess image parts for example).

Add your text that you’d like to use.

In this tutorial I used a font called Shorelines. I chose this font because it has the swashes on the ends. You can grab the commercial license here.

To get the swashes at the ends of the words, use the “(” and “)” symbols. Note, this will vary with other fonts. You need to check the character map if you are using other fonts to see how to add swashes.

Resize the font on top your template.

Select the font layer and the tile layer, and SLICE. Then remove the parts that are extending out of the tile template.

Once you are happy with your design, FLATTEN everything. You should only have one layer that is a PRINT and CUT.

STEP 3: CUT IT OUT

Follow the prompts on your Cricut machine to Print then Cut. I used a laser printer and printed on regular printer paper.

STEP 4: ASSEMBLE ORNAMENT

Peel the tile off the tile grid.

Put a thin layer of mod podge on top of the tile. This will act as an adhesive layer.

Place the design you cut out on your Cricut.

Pour more mod podge on top and completely cover it. Go over it using up and down strokes to create a cohesive pattern. Double-check that you sealed all of the edges.

Let it dry (this will take a few hours, best to leave it overnight).

Glue a piece of ribbon on the back of the ornament.

Using the same tile template, cut out a cork backing. I used the Faux Suede setting on my Cricut Maker.

Glue the cork backing to your tile ornament.

CONGRATULATIONS

Doesn’t it look great?

  1. Thanks for this. FYI, the Amazon link for the cork sheets is not the right one. It links to shipping labels.

    1. Thanks for catching that! I’ve fixed the link! ๐Ÿ™‚
